Podcast: #TBT Speech of Arrested Development (Full Episode)

Today is the 30th-anniversary of Arrested Development’s classic debut album. To pay tribute we’ve put together a full cut of the Speech episodes we recently did. Speech joined the show to discuss the groups’ new album ‘For The FKN Love’ (out now everywhere.) We talk about the group working with Dell-P, Big Daddy Kane, Dee-1, Freddie Foxx, and more of the amazing group of features on the new project (Monie Love & The Sugarhill Gang!) Then we talk about Speech and the group’s varied and interesting career, including Baba Oje & their Unplugged album. Speech shares road stories from touring with James Brown, Parliament, Luke, N.W.A., INXS, & more. Speech also tells the inspiring story of the newspaper his mother started & gives a thought-provoking answer as to whether there was a concentrated effort from the major record labels to subjugate conscious rap music. Then we discuss his self-titled solo debut album. We talk about the relative success of the album through the lens of history, how Speech was ahead of his time musically & with his songwriting, & the project’s success in Japan. Finally, we conclude by going over his 2019 ‘Expansion’ album. We talk about his favorite songs from the project, how he got so many artists on one project, The Vagabond Family, & how hard his verse was on “Do It.”
