Videos: Tk Da Geto Barbie – Trophy

Birmingham, Alabama’s rap scene is heating up at a rapid rate, much thanks to the massive and diverse crop of artists that have appeared and for the most part put the city on the map all within the last three years or so, and although the sound’s of Birmingham artists have been overwhelmingly innovative and highly distinct to the region Birmingham is yet to have a female artist truly push herself through into the city’s elite rap ranks, but in the past few months several female rappers in Birmingham have begun to make their mark and start to define their own respective sounds and brands. Tk Da Geto Barbie is one of my very favorite new up-and-comers beginning to make a name in the city and while her name may make you think that she is going to be making superficial or substance-less music but that is far from the case.

In her newest Carlisle Jones directed visual “Trophy” Tk affirms herself for all of the things she has been through and experienced to this point in her life to get her where she is now, as each trophy to her represents overcoming difficulties in her life unflinchingly. Her delivery is raw but her voice is unmistakable and she shares a similarly sweet but tangy southern drawl as many of her city’s contemporaries and lyrically she is already far beyond most of the other artists in the scene, giving her story that is unwaveringly real and deliberately cutthroat. I am really looking forward to hearing a full project from her at some point and think it is only a matter of time until she is at Birmingham’s forefront.
