Music Review | The Homies, Chance the Rapper, YN Jay, CeeFineAss, and LUCKI

New Music

Here’s this weeks’ rundown of new music from some of your favorite artists in the game.

The Homies, “Shake”

The Homies are ready to “Shake” things up just in time for the summer. With their first new song and video of the year, the 4-man indie rap group (composed of Quiiso, Shloob, Ace Pro, and 2forwOyNE) from Louisville, Kentucky’s Private Garden collective are dancing their way into the limelight. The Hype Williams-inspired video, directed by group member Ace Pro, displays the organic nature of their synergy as they harlem-shake to a catchy ass hook. With a new album in the works, The Homies are positioned to make their presence felt in the industry.

Chance the Rapper, “A Bar About a Bar”

Chicago’s beloved son with the number 3 on his fitted cap, Chance the Rapper, makes his return to music with “A Bar About a Bar.” Lyrically, Chance hasn’t strayed away from the onslaught of bars we’ve grown accustomed to. In fact, I’d like to think he’s picking up the pen where he last left off, curating art on his own terms with no regrets. This song, and video for that matter, are subjective and open to interpretation.

YN Jay, “Shake That A$$ Baby”

YN Jay takes a trip to the Build-A-Freak Workshop in his new video for “Shake That A$$ Baby.” The Coochie Man gives a crash course on anatomy through a twerkable banger that spotlights his sex-crazed jargon and unique rapping style. Ahead of his new album, Young Wild & Free, due June 1st, the Michigan rapper continues to remain authentic – saying whatever comes to mind in a way that’s on-brand and relevant.

CeeFineAss, “Let ‘Em”

CeeFineAss could solve the world’s problems if we let her. With TikTok in a chokehold, the NOLA rapper has finally released her long-awaited, bounce-inspired single, “Let ‘Em.” Lyrically, the song introduces a conditional sense of infidelity, marked by a score of reasons to support a woman’s use of her sexual allure or femininity. According to Cee, if you want to save your relationship, it’s best to leave your man at home this summer – she’s on the prowl.

LUCKI, “GOOD MEMORIES”

LUCKI is the quintessential lifestyle rapper. With “GOOD MEMORIES,” the Chicagoan pens the soundtrack to his evolution, detailing a written account of past events that made him into the man he is today. In typical LUCKI fashion, he has no problem opening up about his struggles with addiction, providing a visual anecdote that’s something like a slideshow presentation about his life.
