Music Review: Toosii, $NOT, Dr. Maleek, FXXXXY & Boslen

New Music

Toosii – Back Together

After a breakthrough 2020, Toosii returns with new music for the new year. With his highly-anticipated mixtape – Thank You For Believing – due this Spring, “Back Together” channels that hopeless romantic energy the SCMG (South Coast Music Group) wunderkind is notoriously known for. Since teasing the single via Instagram, the hype surrounding its release peaked once Toosii announced an accompanying visual would follow. The song explores the importance of personal growth and how that sets the foundation for romanticism. With 900 million combined global streams in pocket, I think it’s fair to say that Toosii is undoubtedly a star in the making.

$NOT – Life

Via 300 Entertainment, $NOT returns with the music video for “Life” off of his recently released album, Beautiful Havoc. Embodying the essence of a true sadboi identity, $NOT’s vulnerability on wax is strangely comforting. The Omar Jones directed video finds the 22-year-old emcee crooning hymns of uncertainty that divulges into periods of doubt, depression and even suicidal thoughts. Uniquely enough, his expressiveness offers perspective, letting the rest of a troubled world know that they aren’t alone. Sometimes our biggest threat is our inner self.

Dr. Maleek & MVRVN – Slide (feat. Bino Rideaux)

After debuting at No.1 on iTunes R&B chart for his latest studio album – Complications – Dr. Maleek & MVRVN recruit Bino Rideaux for their new Spring anthem, “Slide”. The song channels Maleek’s melodic riffs and Bino’s Californian drawl to produce a surefire hit by today’s standards. A natural singer-songwriter, Dr. Maleek’s flair for crafting catchy hooks is on full display. As he continues to broaden his sonic palette by way of an experimental soundscape, his versatility in song has garnered global appeal.

FXXXXY – Yeah Kool (feat. Lil Uzi Vert)

The spirit of FXXXXY lives on with the release of his new record, “Yeah Kool,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert. While working on Future and Uzi’s collab project – Pluto X Baby Pluto – in Miami, FXXXXY received a rare opportunity unlike no other. With Future running late to their studio session, this moment allowed the highly-sought-after producer to bond with Uzi, subsequently resulting in the organic collaboration of their track. Swaying between flex-rap and moneyed anecdotes, the dynamic twosome personify a rapper’s lifestyle over atmospheric production. Long Live FXXXXY.

Boslen – Deny (feat. Tyla Yaweh)

Boslen’s dreams turn to reality in his new music video for “Deny”, featuring Tyla Yaweh. At the crossroads where heartfelt mentions and being in denial intersect, you’ll find the 22-year-old artist pouring his heart out on beat. With some assistance from Tyla, Boslen battles with the idea of what could have been and his current reality. He’s a sound architect by definition, taking a hands-on approach in the production of his music. Despite achieving his dreams, in terms of his aspirations as an artist, Boslen remains vexed.
