When Jeff Chery and HamSquad originally linked up, it only took two songs for them to realize that the chemistry was special. When they recorded “Morals” & “Blood Diamonds” last November it quickly became apparent that they should do a full project together.
HamSquad is one of the go-to production teams for artists looking for a hit. Known for their musicality and rich sound, the Florida duo has produced for a disparate range of artists. Their eclectic discography ranges from Chief Keef to Kendrick Lamar. The Vega EP is the culmination of their early collaborations with Chery. Throughout the project it’s apparent that the HamSquad really locked in on Jeff’s Vagabond aesthetic, and helped propel him to new levels of artistry. The OJ Da Juiceman assisted “Juice & Soda” has been particularly well recieved in all corners.
Of the many skills in Jeff’s wheelhouse, one is the ability to make hits without sounding commercial. That is demonstrated throughout, but particularly on “What You Doin” which is a perfect club song for today’s rapidly changing club scene. In addition to the EP, Chery is also premiering the video for the song which you can check out below.
Don’t worry though, there’s plenty of steak to go with the sizzle. The EP is also full of Jeff Chery’s usual aggressive and thought provoking music. He has a gift for infusing a lot of himself into his work, and it’s clear that while bold, he also deeply analyzes what’s going on around him. Tracks such as “Morals” & “Family” display these traits that make Chery such a complete listen.
