Interview: Typhanie & Co. talks challenges as a female rapper in the DMV, “Double Tap” & more.

Currently DMV based, Typhanie & Co. has brought a very unique flow to todays era of female rap. A cross between trap and consciousness. It is not too many who are able to master combining the two. She recently dropped her 6 Track project “Double Tap” which definitely gives you all of the vibes you may have been missing.

We got the chance to speak with her on the topic of female rap, her new project and more.

check out exclusive interview below:

Mikala: As a creative during these crazy times it is very easy to get a creative block. How are you managing to really keep the juices flowing?

Typhanie&Co: Man…I’ve been running into so many creative blocks lately and really I just have to push through. What I try not to do is force it too much. If I force it too much, I’m probably not going to like what I’m making. So I make sure I take the time I need to get focused.

Mikala: In your perspective how would you describe the music scene in the DMV, specifically the female rap scene?

Typhanie&Co: I think the just the DMV rap scene in general is very, very  slept on but especially for female rappers because it’s like it’s already hard to come out of the DMV at all as an artist but then when you add the…people don’t want to call it a stigma but when you add the stigma of being a female rapper to that it’s even harder to get people to take you seriously. It’s definitely difficult. Not just for me but for any female out here trying to rap.

Mikala:  I did do some snooping on your Instagram and I saw that you have your hands in just about everything creative! Would you say it is a little overwhelming to be multifaceted?

Typhanie&Co: I will say it can be. There’s so much that I want to do. But obviously I can’t do it all at once. I will say the part that’s overwhelming is deciding what am I currently going to make a priority and what of my other genius creative ideas am I going to have to put on the back burner.

Mikala: Definitely feel that! Now how exactly did rapping come about for you?

Typhanie&Co: My team that I work with (StudioTwelve) I found them and I started working with them on the creative coordinator side. I was doing graphic designs for clients that would come through and handling the calendar, making sure things ran smoothly. That allowed me to see the people that use the studio; not only for photography purposes but the music purposes as well. I got a behind the scenes look at that and I was like…Uhm this looks fun, I can do that (laughs)! I just went ahead and I tried. So we just tried our hands at making music. I was good when I started, now I’m great!

Mikala: Getting into your music, let me say that I love me a laid back artist. Your flow is very smooth, your voice is soothing! Listening to your project “Double Tap” it was so good! How was it creating this project overall?

Typhanie&Co: Thank you! Really, creating the project… It kind of  gradually happened over time. We have a couple singles on there. We have two singles “Departing from London” and “Say That”, those are ones that are like passing songs. I wanted to create a song from start to finish on my own, writing, lyrically, picking the beat and everything like that. We have 4 other tracks which were actually Instagram freestyles. So many people were asking “When am I going to be able to stream”? “When am I going to be able to play this song outside of listening to it on your Instagram”? And I was like you know what…let’s compile these into a project.

Mikala: I love that as I was listening to it. I can’t put you in a box. I think that’s so important. You’re in your own lane!

Typhanie&Co: Yup! And that was my goal. I never wanted to be compared to anybody else doing it. I definitely wanted to show the versatility, the type of songs I could make, the type of flows I can pick up on.

Mikala: Yes you threw a little trap in there and also consciousness as well.

Typhanie&Co: Thank you so much I appreciate that!

Mikala: Now, as we are about to close out the year what are some goals that you want to achieve in 2021?

Typhanie&Co: 2021…some of things I want to do musically, I really want some good placements. I want to hear my songs on a show that I might be binge watching on Netflix. I also want to drop a super dope visual that goes mega viral because I have a bet with someone on my team (laughs) once I get to a million views they have to eat Oysters. I gotta make sure that happens!
